The All-American Rejects and Candy Hearts are not on tour together, but we think that they’re two great bands with fans that should give each other a shot, so we’re happy to put them together for a new PropertyOfZack Playlist feature. Kiss - Detroit Rock City
When I was 5 I begged my brother to lend me $5 so I could buy my first LP. It was “Destroyer” by Kiss. This was the first song on the first record I ever bought by my first favorite band.
Queen - Mustapha
I owned every Queen album on cassette at one point. I wonder what I did with all those… This is an underrated Queen tune, but one that perfectly melds their grasp of melody with their brilliant weirdness.
Misfits - All Hell Breaks Loose
I miss when when bands had mystique. I remember how excited I’d get when I’d come across an old zine that had a Misfits picture I’d never seen. One single picture! This was pre-internet, pre-trademarked Misfits, even pre-Collection II. I used to buy the shit of bootleg 7”s trying to get all the tunes that were living in out-of-print limbo.
You had to work hard to be a fan. It made you appreciate it. I miss that shit… Anyway, this is a great song.
Nomeansno - Brainless Wonder *Song is not on Spotify
One of the first touring punk shows I ever saw was Nomeansno and DOA.
I went for DOA and left only caring about Nomeansno. I bought the cassette of Wrong at that show and learned that punk can be fucking difficult to play. This album still blows my mind.
ALL - Can’t Say
ALL is probably my favorite band. Picking one tune is hard. How this was a b-side is beyond me. I still strive to one day play as well any of the guys in this band.
Screeching Weasel - Leather Jacket *Song is not on Spotify
Picking one Weasel tune is also tough. I was the perfect age to fall right into the 90’s Lookout! thing. Weasel was my gateway into it. So many great memories from that time…
Propagandhi - Less Talk, More Rock
Propagandhi’s second record struck me hard. Musically, lyrically, politically… all that shit. It really made this high-schooler think while in an environment that wouldn’t have made him do so otherwise.
Still one of my favorite records ever.
Dillinger Four - Our Science Is Tight
Fuck, did D4 ever up the ante in the 90’s. I’m so surprised it took a decade for so many bands to start ripping them off so hard. I know my shitty pop-punk band tried to in the late 90’s. We failed horribly…
Jets To Brazil - Conrad
It’s hard to do a story song right. They did it. Fucking sad one at that. Having become a recording geek, the production on this record still blows my mind. Such simple arrangements that sound so full and good!
The Weakerthans - Wellington’s Wednesdays
When I heard that John K. Samson had a new band I immediately wrote G7 and asked if my dumb zine could have a copy for review when it came out. For months they sent fliers and promo stuff before one day the unexpected actually happened… The CD showed up in our PO Box! I had expected something along the lines of John’s songs on “Less Talk,” so I was a little taken aback at first. But it didn’t take long for me to realize how much better this was than my expectations. Such a great songwriter to this day…- Mike Kennerty

P.S. Eliot – Acid Flashbacks *Song is not on Spotify
There’s something about this song that always reminds me of this certain kind of loneliness and sense of freedom I sometimes experience on tour. It’s weird to feel both things at the same time, like having nothing and everything, but when she sings “maybe I’ll stay gone forever,” it completely hits home.
Sundials - The Mad Stork Makes Another Movie
If someone told me this song was actually Third Eye Blind right before they hit it big, I’d totally believe them. Everything about this song is perfect to me — the guitars and melody and lyrics — I’m just in love with it, and I wish more bands made music like this. ”When I Couldn’t Breathe” is coming out on Sept 25. on Asian Man Records, but you can pre-order it now.
The Menzingers – Good Things
Can I just make this my theme song?
The Lemonheads – The Outdoor Type
Adorable song and I completely relate. Completely. And I will never stop swooning over Evan Dando, okay?
What’s Eating Gilbert – Out Of My Head
Constantly being reminded of someone you wish would notice you or you wish was around but isn’t, is terrible, but this song manages to capture that feeling of “Oh my gosh, I can’t believe someone this awesome chose me out of everyone else and I can’t wait to see them” rather than “stop showing up in my internet feed because you make me feel so insignificant I want to throw my computer across the room and sleep.”
Superchunk – This Summer
This song documents the best parts of the start of summer: mix tapes, driving with your friends, sleeping on the floor, staying up late and abandoning most of your real life responsibilities for fun. It’s one of those songs that I wish was my life on repeat.
Best Coast – Better Girl
I feel like if I wrote a song about the last year of my life and just said everything that was on my mind with no filter, it would come out this way. But Best Coast made it really catchy instead of whiny, and ironically, a song about having “no fun” is pretty fun. This is my favorite song off of their new record.
